Weather Stick Testing Chamber

This is the inside of the testing chamber.

It has been necessary to exclude much of the outdoor light since the Display that provides Temperature and % Relative Humidity uses an LCD panel that must be viewed using reflected light from an external dedicated source.  Wide variations in the light level in the chamber could quickly exceed the range of the auto exposure control in the web cam used.  A single 12 volt halogen spot is used to illuminate both the sticks and the data display.

This is the outside of the testing chamber.

There are vents in the roof and the floor that let the outside conditions in but not the light.

So now we are ready to turn on the camera with a twice an hour picture rate and let it accumulate pictures until after the weather has produced some truly interesting cycles.  These pictures will subsequently provide performance data   with the important parameters of angular deflection, % relative humidity, time and date.  Some typical results are displayed in the next section.   A typical picture series has been converted into a movie (video), which is included in the next section.  When presented at a 10 frames per second rate the weather-sticks will appear to move at a rate that is 9000 times faster than the real life.  You will be able to see that the deflection direction tracks the change in the relative humidity.
